Part III · Love, Relationships & People

CHAPTER 13Love Should Not Require You to Disappear

Control · Manipulation · Disrespect · Self-abandonment

Compromise means both people adjust. Self-abandonment means one person keeps shrinking and the other keeps getting comfortable. From the outside they can look similar for a while. From the inside, one makes you calmer and one makes you quieter.

Watch for control dressed as care: monitoring, isolating you from family, deciding what you wear, controlling money, keeping you off balance so you're always apologizing. If any of this describes your home, please talk to someone you trust or a local support service. You are allowed to get help.

Keep these

  • “Love that requires your silence is not asking for peace. It is asking for compliance.”
  • “You should not need a strategy to speak in your own house.”
  • “Confusion is often the point. Clarity is the way out.”

Practical steps

  • Keep your own bank account, your own documents, and your own passwords.
  • Notice whether you edit yourself before speaking. That is data.
  • Keep at least two relationships outside the household.
  • If you feel unsafe, contact a trusted person or a domestic support organization in your area.
