Part I · Straighten Your Crown

CHAPTER 01The Woman in the Mirror

Identity · Self-awareness · Value · Separating you from your history

Somewhere along the way you learned to introduce yourself by your usefulness. Somebody's mother. Somebody's employee. Somebody's daughter who always answers the phone. Those things are real, and some of them you would choose again tomorrow. But none of them are the whole address of who you are.

Look at her honestly for a minute. Not the version other people manage, and not the version that only shows up when everything is handled. The one who has been quietly holding the schedule, the money, the mood of the room. She has a name, a mind of her own, and opinions she has not said out loud in a while. Start there.

Keep these

  • “You are more than the roles you perform.”
  • “What happened to you is history. It is not your identity.”
  • “A woman who knows herself is much harder to talk out of her own life.”

Practical steps

  • Write ten sentences that start with "I am" without naming a single job or relationship.
  • Name one belief about yourself you inherited from someone who did not know you well.
  • Say your own full name out loud, slowly, once a day this week.
  • Ask one person who loves you well: what do you see in me that I overlook?
