Part I · Straighten Your Crown
CHAPTER 04Boundaries Are Not Bad Manners
Saying no · Time · Emotional limits · Family · Work
A boundary is not a punishment you hand somebody. It is a description of how you can stay in the relationship without resenting them. Said plainly, kindly, and once. The people who love you will adjust. The people who were benefiting from your lack of limits will call you difficult. Both of those reactions are useful information.
Notice that you already have boundaries. You just enforce them for your job, your kids, and your church calendar before you enforce them for yourself.
Keep these
- “You do not have to explain every boundary to people committed to crossing it.”
- “"No" is a complete sentence, but "not this time" is easier to say out loud.”
- “A limit you never enforce is just a wish.”
Practical steps
- Pick one recurring drain and set an end time for it this week.
- Write one boundary sentence and rehearse it until it sounds boring.
- Turn off notifications for one group chat.
- Decide in advance what you will say the next time you're asked for money.
